The best shorts for running 2024 spring-summer

I picked those styles for many reasons. First of all I love them and use them for my runs. Most of the styles are the best we can find on the market now. Some styles new and some been with us for many years. Usually I do have lululemon shorts in my reviews, but lately I feel like they stoped producing good running shorts and they are changing styles so fast and I couldn’t find any good shorts in my opinion from their website. Also I know there are much more good shorts out there, so if you have recommendations, put them in comments and people can see them.

The best for trails

1. Gore Wear Men’s R7 2-in-1 Shorts:

• Description: These are men style and I love love them so much. They are have an amazing quality and details. These shorts combine a supportive inner liner with a loose, breathable outer layer, offering both comfort and performance on extended runs. The construction includes an elastic waistband with an integrated drawcord for a secure fit, and the shorts are equipped with multiple pockets, including a back zip pocket and two side pockets for carrying essentials like nutrition and small items. Material-wise, these shorts are a blend of high-performance fabrics that offer outstanding breathability, rapid drying time, and a lightweight feel. They also include partial mesh inserts for enhanced ventilation, flatlock seams for comfort, and reflective details for increased visibility during those early morning or late evening runs. I used them for the whole day during TSP and no complains, no chafing, nothing. They might be a bit warm, but not really due to really light and high quality materials.
• Pockets: Includes two side pockets, one is small zip pocket and lots of space along the waistband.
• Inseam: The inseam length is approximately 9.8 inches.

2. Arc’teryx 8 Essent Shorts

• Description: The Essent shorts are as light as they come, making you feel almost as if you’re wearing nothing at all. This isn’t just any lightweight fabric, though; it’s designed to be quick-drying and moisture-wicking, a perfect companion for those intense workouts or unexpected downpours. What’s more, the fabric’s stretchability is just right, ensuring that whether you’re climbing up a steep trail or stretching out on a yoga mat, your movement is never restricted. The design of these shorts is thoughtfully minimalist, with practical features like a high-rise waist that adds an extra layer of comfort and coverage. I use them for all my races, as not get heavy or pulled down when they are wet from sweat, have lot os pockets and always stay in place.

3. 2XU Aero Reflect Hi-Rise Compression Shorts:

• Description: These shorts are crafted from PWX fabric, known for its powerful, lightweight, and flexible compression qualities that help reduce muscle movement and speed up recovery. This feature is crucial for improving performance and lowering the risk of injury during intense activities. For practicality, these shorts include a high, slimming, and secure waistband with multiple pockets. These pockets offer ample, bounce-free storage for essentials such as phones, cards, and keys. Moreover, the fabric composition includes a blend of nylon and Lycra, ensuring the shorts are quick-drying and moisture-wicking, keeping the wearer cool and dry during workouts. The pockets are really wide and bit. At the back pocket you even can store a jacket during the race. They very good for races or everyday runs.
• Pockets: Features multiple pockets including a secure zip back pocket and side pockets for essential items.
• Inseam: 8 inches.

4. Nike ACG Dri-Fit Advanced ‘Crater Lookout’ Shorts

• Description: Outdoor-ready, moisture-wicking shorts designed to feel light and comfortable, suitable for both water and land activities.The shorts are crafted with sustainability in mind, using at least 50% recycled polyester and nylon fibers. This aligns with Nike’s commitment to environmental responsibility. They feature a high waistband for better coverage and side pockets for practical storage.  The shorts provide a snug, body-hugging feel without restricting movement, ideal for hiking or water sports. Moreover, the practical design with side pockets for storing small items and a high waistband for secure coverage are well-received, making the shorts not only functional but also convenient for carrying essentials during outdoor adventures. They fun, pockets are so wide and it is easy to carry bottles and food. They might be a bit short for my preferences, but they stay in place and never rode up on me.

The best for short races

1. On Running Race Shorts:

To enhance comfort and reduce the risk of chafing, the shorts are designed with minimal seams. They are very light and soothe, no compression at all. I feel like they are good for races or any runs, just luck of pockets a bit confusing.
• Pockets: Includes a key pocket in the waistband and additional pass-thru pocket for carrying tank to t-shirt.
• Inseam: 7”

2. District Vision 7in Pocketed Half Tights:

• Description: These tights are crafted for support and convenience during active pursuits. Made from a quick-drying, lightweight Italian fabric, they’re ideal for activities that require both comfort and functionality. They feature a rear hidden zip pocket that’s ideal for securely stashing essentials like keys or cards. Additionally, there’s a larger pass-thru pocket at the back designed to minimize bounce while carrying extra layers or larger items. The fabric’s four-way stretch capability not only supports your muscles but also ensures you move freely without constraints, enhancing your running performance. The fabric feels more compressive, they have pretty snug fit and especially in waist area. I recommend size up. But I love how they are looking on the body during runs. 
• Pockets: Features a hidden zip pocket at the rear for small essentials and a pass-thru pocket for l carrying tank to t-shirt.
• Inseam: 7 inches.

3. Bandit Vento Men’s 3″ Splitty Short:

• Description: I got mens one as women’s where sold out, I feel like they are the same. These shorts are crafted from Vento™ fabric, known for its stretch woven quality with an all-over perforated pattern, providing both breathability and style. They feature a water-resistant finish to help keep you dry during activities. These shorts are tailored for a comfortable and performance-oriented fit, with a dramatic split at the sides to aid in mobility and prevent chafing, making them perfect for racing or intense training sessions. The shorts also emphasize practicality with built-in briefs that include hidden pockets for essential items, suitable for runners who need to carry gels, keys, or other small items discreetly. The water-resistant finish adds an extra layer of utility, making them versatile across different running environments. Fun for races or summer.
• Pockets: Includes built-in briefs with four hidden pockets designed to securely hold essentials like fuel gels.
• Inseam: 3 inches. 

4. Bandit Stamina Racing Buns with Pockets:

• Description: The Bandit Stamina™ Racing Buns with Pockets are engineered to deliver top performance for racers. They’re made from Bandit’s proprietary Stamina™ fabric, which is praised for its stretchability and ability to move seamlessly with your body. This fabric is a double-knit construction that enhances both stability and durability, making these shorts ideal for demanding races. One of the standout features of these shorts is their practical design, which includes four hidden drop-in gel pockets located at the back. These pockets are perfect for carrying essential fuels during long races, allowing for easy access without interrupting your stride. The waistband is brushed elastic, designed to hold the shorts securely in place without discomfort. They feel really cool and comfortable in all ares. Haven’t try them yet in running, but I feel like they going to be perfect for men runs on the beaches.

The best for long races

1. Bandit Superbeam Next Gen 7 Pocket Men’s Quarter Tights:

• Description: Those men same as half tights but with different area around the tights and I love it. They are my favorite shorts now. Good length, good fit, pockets, super cool shorts. Made from Italian wicking compression Superbeam™ fabric, these tights offer a smooth feel and keep you cool during intense activities. They are particularly noted for their comprehensive storage solutions, featuring seven pockets, including four gel pockets at the back, a back zipper stash pocket, and an iPhone-ready side pocket on each leg, making them ideal for runners who need to carry multiple items securely. 2. Bandit Superbeam Next Gen 7 Pocket Men’s Half Tights:

• Description: These are men, but I really love them and running in them almost every day. They are seem to be one of the best shorts in years. These tights are crafted from Italian wicking compression Superbeam™ fabric, which is praised for its smooth feel and cooling properties during physical activity. This fabric choice helps maintain comfort even as the race heats up. One of the standout features of these tights is their optimized pocket system, which includes a total of seven pockets. 3. Bandit Stamina 3″ Women’s Compression Shorts:

• Description: Basically it is the same family as 5 and 7 inches, but shorter. These shorts are crafted from Stamina™ fabric, which offers an all-way stretch to move seamlessly with your body, making them perfect for running, training, or any other high-energy activities. They feature dual anti-bounce side pockets and a clean back zipper pocket, ideal for securely storing essentials like your phone and keys during workouts.
• Pockets: Two side pockets suitable for a phone and a secure back zipper pocket for keys and cards.
• Inseam: 3 inches.

4. Nike Go Shorts

• Description: One of the best shorts for women on the market, materials and fit are amazing, same as price and colors. Designed primarily for active use, these shorts feature a firm-support construction that ensures everything stays in place, no matter the intensity of the activity. The high-waisted design not only provides extra coverage but also adds a secure, snug fit that enhances body confidence during workouts. Material is very thick and feels so soft. The fabric’s compressiveness is especially appreciated during high-impact activities, as it supports muscles and reduces vibrations. Practicality is another key aspect of these shorts, emphasized by the inclusion of multiple pockets. These are strategically placed to hold essentials securely, a feature particularly useful for runners or those who prefer to go hands-free. Additionally, these shorts are part of Nike’s sustainable product line, made with at least 50% recycled nylon fibers, addressing the growing consumer demand for environmentally responsible products. Also if you are worried about stains from sweat you will never need to think about it in Nike GO. My only issue with them was the waist area during ultras, they seem a bit higher than I prefer and got some chafing on waist.

The best for everyday

1. Nike Universa Shorts

• Description: The Nike Universa Women’s Medium-Support High-Waisted 8″ Biker Shorts. They are very very familiar with nike go, but softer, better for every day look. They feature Nike’s InfinaSmooth fabric, which is not only squat-proof but also cool and sleek to the touch, ensuring that you stay comfortable during workouts. The high-waisted design provides added coverage, enhancing comfort and support. These shorts are perfect for a variety of activities. Whether you’re hitting the gym, going for a run, or engaging in high-intensity sports, the medium support and snug fit of these shorts keep everything in place without restricting movement.  Universa shorts, made with at least 50% recycled nylon fibers. This approach not only supports Nike’s commitment to reducing environmental impact but also appeals to the eco-conscious consumer. You can find them in lots of fun colors. Softer than GO, and I really like it, better waist area, smoother materials, less pockets but so good for everyday.

2. FP Movement Light As Air Printed Run Shorts

• Description: For me they are might be too short, but pockets are amazing and I love the waist area. They’re equipped with a zip pocket at the double-layer mesh waistband—an ideal spot for stashing your keys or cards securely. Whether you’re spinning, stepping onto the elliptical, or showing off your moves in a dance class, these shorts are designed to support medium-impact activities with ease. What’s more, the high-rise fit and relaxed design ensure that you can move freely without any constraints, blending style and functionality effortlessly.
• Pockets: One zip pocket located at the double-layer mesh waistband.
• Inseam: Approximately 2.75 inches.

3. On Running Pace Shorts:

• Description: Really nice and comfortable shorts. Maybe they are a bit heavy and have more materials but it is ok for everyday runs. These high-performance running shorts are designed for optimal comfort and support during runs. They feature compression tights inside for additional support and are crafted from CleanCloud® fabric, which is made from recycled carbon emissions. The Pace Shorts are noted for their lightweight and breathable fabric, which feels like wearing almost nothing, providing freedom of movement and comfort during workouts​ . 
• Pockets: The shorts have two mesh-lined pockets on the sides and additional back zip pocket , making them ideal for carrying essentials like energy gels.
• Inseam: 8-9”

4. Bandit Stamina 7″ Women’s Compression Shorts:

• Description: Really good shorts for everyday or races. They stay in place, they do not show sweat, they do have perfect pockets , waist and lenght. Those shorts are made from the Stamina™ fabric, a double-layer, matte-finished material known for its all-way stretch. This ensures a flexible fit that moves seamlessly with your body, making them ideal for a wide range of activities from running to more intensive workouts. One of the standout features of these shorts is the ample storage options. They are designed with dual anti-bounce side pockets suitable for phones and other small items, as well as a clean back zipper pocket for securely holding keys and cards. The inclusion of Italian Framis grip tape at the bottom hem of the shorts prevents them from riding up during activity, maintaining both comfort and coverage without squeezing too tightly.
